The hydroxychloroquine alliance: how far-right leaders and alt-science preachers came together to promote a miracle drug

Abstract Soon after the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, world saw far-right leaders uniting to promote hydroxychloroquine despite controversial results. Why have some actively promoted drug since then, contradicting recommendations made by their own government’s health authorities? Our argument is twofold. First, has been an integral tool medical populist performance in context pandemic. We adopt Lasco & Curato’s (2018) definition populism as a political style based on performances public crises that pit ‘the people’ against establishment’ using alternative knowledge claims cast doubt credibility doctors, scientists, and technocrats. Second, rather than being individual endeavor, addressing coronavirus crisis led populists build alt-science network. define it loose movement alleged truth-seekers who publicly advance scientific at crossroads between partial evidence, pseudo-science, conspiracy theories. It comprises businesspeople celebrities united distrust governments mainstream science. In this article, we look how alliance was formed, well its policy implications. To end, compare why Donald Trump Jair Bolsonaro appealed when crisis. By mobilizing concepts alt-science, paper aims contribute scholarship relationship politics policy-making.
